RU486 is not the easy way out that abortion supporters claim it is. "Our data support the concept that the antiglucocorticoid RU486 at pharmacological concentrations can exert agonistic-immunosuppressive effects." --Antonakis, N. et al., Journal of Steroid Biochemsitry, 1991 39(6), p. 929-935. "The time elapsed between RU486 intake and complete expulsion was 2.4 +/- 1.3 days. Expulsion took place on the third day in 935 women (72 percent) and on the fourth day in 273 women (21 percent)." --Shangchun, W., et al., Contraception, 1992 46, p. 203-210. "Uterine bleeding occurred on the second or third day after RU486 intake in 1256 women (88.8 percent), and lasted 11.7 +/- 6.4 (SD) days, range 2-55 days. One subject had blood transfusions due to excessive bleeding." --Shangchun, W., et al., Contraception, 1992 vol 46, p. 203-210. "It should be emphasized that the [RU486/PG] treatment must be used under close medical supervision in order to monitor the uterine bleeding." --Shangchun, W., et al., Contraception, 1992 vol 46, p. 203-210. "Prolonged bleeding/spotting lasting more than two weeks had been found in more than 20 percent of women who had complete abortion in this study [of RU486/prostaglandin treatment]." --Shangchun, W., et al., Contraception, 1992 vol 46, p. 203-210. "It should be emphasized that RU486 in combination with prostaglandins be used only in clinics where emergency facilities are available." --Shangchun, W., et al., Contraception, 1992 vol 46, p. 203-210. In an article by Hazem El-Refaey, M.D., et al., in the April 13, 1995 _New England Journal of Medicine_ on the use of RU 486 states, "Yet the combination [of RU 486 and misoprostol to induce abortion] failed in 5-13% of these subjects." 17-20% of these women did not keep their follow-up appointments, while the drugs caused serious side effects up to 70% of the time, raising serious questions about the safety of RU 486. "If women can't be followed up in a Western industrialized country," Bogomir Kuhar, Pharm.D., concluded, "how will they be followed up in rural areas or in Third World nations_"
