Juvenile
Diabetes Foundation Supports Stem Cell Research
Washington,
DC
-- In a move that will frustrate pro-life advocates, the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is launching a major TV and print
advertising campaign aimed and encouraging President Bush to support
federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.
The
ads, which are running on national and Washington cable programs and
in key print news publications, feature Samantha, an 11-year-old with
juvenile diabetes.
Pro-life
organizations are working to oppose federal funding of stem cell
research that involves killing unborn children. They say that numerous
life-affirming alternatives exist -- such as obtaining stem cells from
umbilical cords, fat, placenta and even corpses -- that can lead to
cures
of dises such as diabetes.
JDRF,
the world's leading nonprofit, nongovernmental funder of diabetes
research, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile
diabetes -- a disease which strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin
dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating
complications. Since inception, JDRF has provided more than $410 million
to diabetes research worldwide.
