The right to life movement must address the violence
- Frederica Matthews-Green, pro-life author and spokesperson in First Things: "There are many reasons why twenty years of frustration, ridicule, and persecution should have pro-life tempers running high. There are more reasons for us to swallow our pride, turn the other cheek, and humbly save babies the only way we can--by showing ourselves the loving servants of their hurting mothers."
"Pro-life Ameircans must take the moral high ground and vigorously oppose vigilante violence against abortion doctors or anyone else." Dr. Richard Land, Executive Director of the Christian Life Commission of the Southern Baptist Church.
Francis Canavan, Political Science Professor at Fordham University: "Like it or not the pro-life cause is of necessity a moral cause whose success depends on persuassion and can only be harmed by acts that horrify the public."
"We feel that it is extremely important to deliver the message to the public that killing abortionuists is wrong." Michelle Arocha Allen, National Right to Life communications director.
"Now [the public] has a reason to hate the pro-life movement.... Certain abortionists (and a few of their clients) have reported that the violent behavior of some pro-lifers has increased their resolve to defend abortion." Maria McFadden, Executive Editor for the Human Life Review.
"It's time to raise the level of the debate. The demonization of the entire pro-life movement for the actions of a few has gone on too long." Mary Kay Culp, president of Missouri Right to Life.
N.Y. POST's Ray Kerrison: "The murder last March of abortionist Dr. David Gunn by a misguided zealot probably is the single most damaging act ever committed against the pro-life movement in the United States. ... Dr. Gunn's death and the wounding of another abortion doctor, in Kansas five months later have embarrassed and harmed the pro-life cause where all others
failed. As a result of the shooting, [pro-lifers] are now portrayed as wild-eyed fanatics bent on violence and death." (N.Y. Post 12/15/93)
Oregon Right To Life's Lynda Harrington: "Maybe the basis for that new wave of thinking is a deep seeded frustration. I think it has disastrous consequences on saving unborn children, on the pro-life movement
in general, because what it says is, 'We don't like killing in this instance, but hey this instance it's okay'" (12/8/93)
Acts of violence are "Acts of lunacy,'' -- Bill Price, president of Texans United for Life. ``It does nothing to further the cause.'' (8/29/98)
Shirley Lang, member of Lincoln Right to Life member, said killing and goes against the pro-life movement's goals. "Anybody who kills an abortion doctor becomes the killer himself," she said. "He's guilty of murder." (Associated Press, 10/27/98).
