Girl Surprises Doctors, Recovers From Coma
Source: Associated Press; June 13, 2001

Stanford, CA -- Last week, doctors gave 2-year-old Kayla Resendez only
a slim chance of coming out of a coma in the wake of a head-on collision
on Highway 156.

On Monday, those doctors were proven wrong as the little girl awakened at
the Stanford University Medical Center. She apparently is in pretty good
condition overall.

The toddler, her mother, Kathryn Williamson, 25 of Modesto, and
Williamson's fiance, 23-year-old Daniel Patereau of Turlock, were on the
way to Monterey June 6 when they were hit head-on. Williamson and Patereau
were killed, and Kayla was removed from the wreckage unconscious.

The couple was due to be married next month.

"We have seen a miracle happen right under our eyes, yet we are feeling
tragedy at the same time," said Leona Radich, Williamson's grandmother.
"Kayla is a survivor, by the grace of God, but the people next to her, who
loved her dearly, were killed."
